Law Enforcement For Legal Marijuana Leader Looks At Medical Marijuana Laws

Those who want to legalize the use of marijuana have what some may consider an unlikely ally: law enforcement. “The public has waked up to the fact that we need to change our marijuana laws. Savvy politicians would do well to catch up,” Neill Franklin wrote in a Nov. 24 letter to The New York Times. Franklin is the executive director of Law Enforcement Against Prohibition, an international nonprofit coalition of current and former police officers. His letter — the latest step in LEAP’s nearly decade-long campaign to stop the “war on drugs” — came days after The Desert Sun reported that some of the eastern Coachella Valley’s most prominent politicians quietly explored an idea last year to turn the city of Coachella into a major grower and supplier of medical marijuana in California. “In an earlier era it may have been a smart move for politicians to act ‘tough on drugs’ and stay far away from legalization,” Franklin wrote.
