Whittier Extends Moratorium On New Marijuana Dispensaries

In light of the uncertainty of California’s medical marijuana law, now being challenged in the courts, the Whittier City Council has extended for 10 months and 15 days a moratorium on issuing any more permits for such a medical marijuana dispensary.

The original Whittier moratorium on the dispensaries was enacted Jan. 24, but could legally last for only 45 days under state law. But the extension is allowed after the first 45 days. The vote for the extension Feb. 14 was 5-0. In a written report to the council, Community Development Director Aldo Schindler noted that the city’s lone permitted dispensary, approved in October 2010 at 8116 Byron Road, was approved under a set of tight conditions as was called for by state law at that time.
